ENYGF2021 Report by Pau Aragon Grabiel

From 27-30 September 2021, I had the pleasure of attending ENYGF in Tarragona. Its purpose was to provide an international platform for knowledge transfer, discussion, and sharing best practices among young professionals, Ph.D. students, and graduates. While for some ENYGF was the first reunion of the post-Covid era, for me it was also my first-ever experience in a congress. Moreover, as a person who was born and raised in Tarragona, the fact that so many nuclear professionals met in my hometown made it even more special. During four intense days, I got together with amazing people from all around the globe, many of whom find themselves in a similar professional situation. This was an icebreaker that allowed me to make the most of every moment.

On Monday, I gave a presentation on thermo-mechanics of lead-cooled small modular reactors within the technical track covering the topics related to reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, and simulation. It was a truly enriching experience as it provided me with very valuable feedback from the attendees. On Tuesday and Wednesday, I attended the panel sessions related to the hot-topic Breakthrough in Nuclear Fuel & Materials, which focused on the latest advances in accident-tolerant fuel (ATFS) technologies. Given that my main research interests are precisely in the field of ATFs, I was offered to co-moderate one of the sessions. Thus, I should like to express my most sincere thanks to the
organization for the opportunity.

Finally, I would like to highlight that the ENYGF agenda was not limited to the stunning building of Tarragona’s seminary, but also included plenty of technical visits, social activities, and a memorable gala dinner. I particularly enjoyed the visit to the Ascó control room simulator in the premises of Tecnatom, as well as each one of the social gatherings that took place every evening at Plaça de la Font, during which I got to meet plenty of new people in a more casual atmosphere. I hope to see you all in the next edition of ENYGF! #LookAhead
